visit mount nelson, cape town
Old money just got a rebrand…
Welcome to Cape Town’s most beautiful hotel
HoliCityGuide has the privilege of taking you to Mount Nelson, Cape Town. We are hoping that this exclusive experience will make it to your list, on your next visit to the Mother City!
Mount Nelson (no link to Nelson Mandela, we know…) is located on the foot of majestic Table Mountain in Gardens and opened in 1899.
From John Lennon to the late Queen Elizabeth II and (the actual) Nelson Mandela, the five-star Victorian complex is the city’s most notable hotel.
Yes, it is true, the hotel is pink! The colour was chosen to commemorate peace and the end of World War II, propelling the hotel among the most iconic places to visit in Cape Town. The entrance, with its columns, will take your breath away, setting the tone of a glamorous retreat.
The hotel is reasonably sized, with around 198 rooms, ranging in size and format. With a beautiful, nice-acre garden where ducks roam freely and one of the largest heated pools in South Africa, there is no excuse not to jump in! The spa (Librisa) is exquisitely decorated, beautifully equipped, and spacious — such a peaceful haven! Treatments are fairly priced, and if you are a Biologique Recherche fan, you will find your match here. You will also find a tennis court, a gym, amazing restaurants in-house, and even a ballroom!
The hotel has a very “old money” finish and look, while still being relevant to our time, and the pinkish/ grey undertones have a role in this. It is filled with modern pieces of art, which adds to the character of the place.
Our favourite places to hang out were the salon by the reception, which has a warm and cosy feel, and the terrasse right outside of the bar, from which you can enjoy your meal.
The main attraction might be their infamous high tea. Book in advance because it gets packed quickly, but there is nothing we recommend more than enjoying Mount Nelson’s excellent tea time. They cater to virtually every dietary preference, so our gluten-free or dairy-free friends will be able to take part in this experience as well.
For tea fans, note that their “tea sommelier” offers 60 varieties of tea, and you can choose any your heart desires!
The service at Mount Nelson is truly exceptional. It embodies the warmth and hospitality of South Africa while maintaining a high standard of luxury. From the moment you arrive, you'll be treated like royalty, ensuring a memorable and comfortable stay.
Hopefully, by now, you will be convinced to drop your suitcases at Mount Nelson, or book for their high-tea!
Let us know if you are planning on doing so, and stay tuned for our Cape Town guide, the HoliCityGuide version!
