gems outside of paris
Did you know that so many hidden and unknown gems are situated outside Paris?
Today, we are taking you to three of our favourite spots less than an hour away from Paris. We emphasised outdoor spaces, so you get relaxing alternatives to the intensity of the city. We also added a food recommendation for each because you always get the most out of your experiences when you are well-fed! Enjoy!
Île Saint- Germain
Located right outside the city, the island is a local favourite because this kept-secret park offers unmatched greenery and peaceful scenery. This old military field was turned into a 21-hectare park placed on the island of La Seine. On your walk there, you will encounter many different types of trees, a funny-looking tower (Tour aux Figures by J. Dubuffet), and a horse ranch. If you are lucky, you might see horses being taken for a pleasant stroll around the park!
We also recommend the restaurant inside the park, l'Île, for an uncomplicated lunch with a bohemian twist.
Versailles
Remaining in the western suburbs of Paris, Versailles has to be on your travel itinerary when you come to Paris. This posh town is most famous for its castle (the official residence of the royal power) and its gardens, which are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city was founded by the well-known Louis XIV and played a significant role in France's history. Make sure you book for the castle and its gardens. We love going there around Christmas time as it is decorated with a giant tree! Stroll along the beautiful streets, where you will encounter historical landmarks and millstones everywhere. It is beautifully maintained in the lush spirit of its original time.
We recommend you stop at Aux Merveilleux de Fred for the most marvellous pastries for le goûter! (google this world, it's worth it!)
Sceaux
Our favourite place on this list, Sceaux, is less famous than Versailles and perhaps further away from Paris (around an hour), but its village-like size is what we love. We grew up there, thus we take great pride in sharing this gem with you! Le Parc de Sceaux (Sceaux's park) is a domain that hosts a castle and a garden, replicas of Versailles'. Both Versailles and Sceaux's domains were built at the same time by the King's minister, Colbert. Although the castle is infinitely more petite, you can visit it, as it often hosts art exhibitions. The garden has our hearts, and we recommend walking around the majestic domain.
Call Don Giovanni upfront for the best Italian food in the area!
